Ten Throwback Books

A weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is… Throwback Freebie

So I chose books that were published at least 10 years ago. I have no idea if I ‘d still like most of these books today, but 11-14 year old me was in love with most of these books. (I think it’s safe to say my taste in books has changed since then.)

46711 . The Forbidden Game (The Forbidden Game #1-3) by L.J. Smith – To this day I am still in love with this series. This series follows Jenny, who buys a board game at this weird store for her boyfriends birthday from the an employee named Julian. When they set up the Game they realize they’ve been transported into the Game where all their worst fears have come to life, and where Julian reigns as the Prince of the Shadows. I will say the second book isn’t the best, but the first and third… *heart eyes*. (1994)

4200312. Dark Visions (Dark Visions #1-3) by L.J. Smith – As soon as I realized this book would be a part of this list the nostalgia hit me all at once. I was in love with this series as a teen. This book follows five teens who have psychic powers and are invited to live in this mansion where they are taught how to control their powers. I devoured this entire trilogy in like two days, I remember this was one of my very first “book hangovers” as a reader. (1994)

64545203. I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls #1) by Ally Carter – Still one of my favorite series ever. The female friendships in this book are phenomenal and one of my favorite things about this series. This follows a girl named Cam, and her three best friends, who all go to Gallagher Academy, an all-girls school for spies. This series only gets better and better as you go on, which I think is rare to find. (2006)

3438814. The Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause – This book had me shook when I first read it in like 2005. It follows a girl named Zoe who meets a boy named Simon, and he’s a vampire. This was like one of the first YA vampire books (way before Twilight was even an idea). I haven’t read it in a long while but I remember this broke my heart. I remember I read it in a day (it’s a very quick read) and I was basically useless after. (1992)

5744095. Eighth Grade Bites (The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod #1) by Heather Brewer – Yeah, this used to be my series back in middle school. This was one of the first series I’d ever read where not all the books had been released yet, so I had to wait forever until the next one (which was horrible!). Now I can see that this series is not the best, the plot was simplistic and it was filled with cliches, but for 13 year old me this was amazing. (2007)

5775376. Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy #1) by Richelle Mead – I read this in like 2009 and I was in love. I thought Rose was the most amazing female character ever, I liked her relationship with Lissa, I loved the world-building, basically I was in heaven with this series. I recently reread it and I didn’t like it as much as I did the first time (mostly because the last three books which I won’t talk about.) But yeah, all throughout middle school and the beginning of high school this was my favorite series. (2006)

129967. Kissed by an Angel (Kissed by an Angel #1-3) by Elizabeth Chandler – This book is cheesy af, but 14 year old me loved love. So this was the best thing 14 year old me had ever read. I remember swooning and grinning uncontrollably. I don’t know how much I would like this now but back then this was pretty great. (1995)

14328. A Certain Slant of Light (Light #1) by Laura Whitcomb –  This story follows two characters: Helen and James. This book has romance and body-snatching in it, which I thought was so unique (still kind of do), and that’s one of the things that really drew me to this. When I first read this I remember thinking I’d never really seen another story like this, especially YA. Fans of unique paranormal stories should check this out! (2005)

925179. Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress #1) by Jeaniene Frost – I LOVE THIS SERIES. If you’re a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer I definitely recommend this. This series follows Cat Crawfield, a half-vampire who kills vampires, and Bones a (full) vampire who is also a bounty hunter. The plot isn’t exactly the most amazing thing you’ll ever read, but this is such a fun series, if you’re looking for something to make you smile this is for you. I read this like 5 or 6 years ago and I fell in love! Also most, if not all, of the series is very good. (2007)

10. Poison Study (Study #1) by Maria V. Snyder – This follows Yelena, who is waiting to be executed. But while she waits she is approached with an offer, be executed or become the Commander’s official food taster. This is a YA fantasy, and as far as plot goes it doesn’t relly stray too much from what you’d expect from a YA fantasy. But I remember these characters being so authentic when I read this.
