The romance genre can be a bit intimidating to get into for the first time. Romance is such a broad genre, with so many sub-genres: erotica, paranormal, contemporary, historical, suspense, etc. Also, there are about a thousand different types of tropes, it can be kind of hard to find something you’d actually enjoy.
Since I have been on a romance spree for basically the last two months I’ve been thinking a lot about different tropes and which ones I like and dislike. These are a few of the “big” tropes to help some of you romance novices into trying out this genre. Also, I tried to find good recommendations for each one, even with tropes I don’t usually like.
The ultimate favorite. Also, a lot of the time one half of the couple will be super grump, WHICH IS BASICALLY MY KINK OK. Usually the hero is older than the heroine, but I don’t care if it’s the other way around, even though lot more rare. 10/10
Bad boy & virgin heroine
Let this trope die please. I feel like NA especially takes advantage of this trope and it usually fails. To be clear, I don’t care if the girl is a virgin or has a lot of sex with a lot of people, and vice versa for a guy. But it’s such a common story for it to be a virgin girl, meets the “man-slut” guy, then suddenly the guy feels this overwhelming need to stop having sex and settle down with this “not like other girls” girl. I’m tired. 2/10
Best friend’s brother or Brother’s best friend
These are different, but I lumped them together because I feel the same way about both. These are really overdone, and I feel like it gets harder and harder to find unique ones as time passes. 4/10
Sometimes this trope can be a bit ridiculous. I mean, what situation is someone in that they need a fake partner? Still I like this trope. Most of the times it’s fun to read about and the situations they’re put in are hilarious. 6/10
I really, really like this trope. *grins* This trope is usually filled with so much tension. You can practically feel the angst coming off every page. (Age gap should probably be a part of this, but I love it so much and it deserved it’s own category.) 9/10
Friends to lovers
This is one of my favorites because it forces the author to actually show us the couple’s relationship beyond the physical stuff. This is usually always devoid of insta-lust / insta-love and the relationship is usually more solid. 10/10
Enemies to lovers / hate to love
Ahh, this one is hard. I think authors tend to skirt the line between enemies to lovers and just being borderline abusive and hateful. But if they steer clear of that line then this tends to become ONE OF MY FAVORITE TROPES. 7/10
Unpopular opinion time, but I actually don’t mind this one too much if done right. When I say “done right” I mean when both people have an equal chance of ending up with the MC, so basically I like it when I have no idea which person is endgame. The Infernal Devices will always have the best love triangle, and be the best CC series, don’t @ me. 5/10
I actually hate this trope so much. I’ve disliked most of the books I’ve read with this trope. I don’t trust this trope, most of the time I hate all the characters. 1/10
Second chance love
This one is usually always a hit or miss for me. Mostly because I usually think the reason they split apart is dumb, or could have easily been avoided if they communicated more. If the reason they broke up isn’t too annoying or unrealistic, I don’t mind this trope at all. 6/10
I know there are so many other tropes out there, but I think I hit the big ones? Do you all have a favorite trope or a trope you will avoid at all costs?
